Technology is constantly evolving and many of us, as a result, are glued to our computer and smart phone screens. It’s difficult to ignore how much of a strong presence they have become in our lives.
Whilst all of these developments are both innovative and exciting, you only need to visit Facebook and Instagram’s latest addition to their homepage (ironically) to find out just how much of your time is spent aimlessly scrolling through social media accounts. The intent behind this new feature is to help us limit our time spent looking at our screens. There really has never been a better time to take a digital detox.
In 2016, we were spending an average of 1 hour and 29 minutes on social media across all devices. We spent 2 hours 51 minutes per day online in total. In 2018, we’re spending on average 3 hours and 25 minutes per day online. This shows a significant increase, and it doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon!
A recent survey shockingly stated that three quarters of UK children spend less time outside than prison inmates. A fifth of the children were not playing outside at all on an average day.
The poll also found that children spent twice as long playing on their screens as playing outside. This has caused concern for parents who understand the value that outdoor play has on children, as they worry that technology is taking over.
The following infographic shows just how important it is to switch off from social media, leave your smart device at home and simply feel the benefits of the outdoors. From improving sleep quality to combating stress, spending time outdoors is crucial for both your mind and body; particularly for children.
