Juliet Robertson: Empty the classroom and fill hearts and minds with memories

14th June 2016

Friday 17th June is a memory-making day. It won’t matter where you go or what the weather is like. There’s an opportunity for every teacher to create a legacy with their class by going outdoors and doing something different.

You may be new to working outside with children – the first time you have crossed the threshold. It doesn’t need to be a lengthy process or a big deal. A short game can be just as successful as a whole afternoon spent outdoors. You may find a colleague who is willing to work with you on a joint session.

The best ideas often come from the children. Ask them what they would want to find out, do or learn outside. Get them to make the plan of action and delegate responsibility. Ask them what expectations need to be in place about behaviour and agree this beforehand. If you need a curriculum focus, then challenge the children to work out how and where their suggestions link to the curriculum. Design seats to sit on outside, or a bag to hold some resources that may be needed. For lots of ideas please do explore my website: I’m a Teacher get me OUTSIDE here!

One small step outside, may be one giant imprint in terms of positive impact. Where will you be this Friday?

Juliet Robertson, one of Scotland’s leading thinkers in education.
