Mapping and navigation: micro journey

Get children outdoors and connecting with their imagination with our lesson idea, Micro Journey.

Micro Journey gets children to mark out their own miniature route, all from the point of view of an ant. It’s a brilliant way to engage children with geography, as it teaches them about routes and mapping.

In addition, it supports literacy by stimulating the use of descriptive language around panoramic views, paths, climbs and tunnels. Likewise, it gets children to ignite their creativity with imaginative place naming.

Furthermore, this plan can be adapted for older children by asking them to write their own guided tour or even record an audio tour as a speaking and listening extension.

Learning through Landscapes developed this resource for a range of levels. It includes references to the curriculum in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
