#MythBuster: Is risky play too dangerous?

We know that the thought of risky play can feel pretty worrying. Intimidatingly high play equipment, a million and one things to trip over. It can feel like outdoor lessons and play are a recipe for disaster!

But we think it’s crucial to embrace this risk. Why? Because giving children the chance to experience risk and to conquer it is crucial for their development. It prepares them for life. It helps them emotionally deal with their fears and concerns. And we think it’s vital.

Across the country, curriculums are now even referring to learning about risk – we’re all being encouraged not to hide pupils from risk.

Let’s face it. The fear of risk of often much worse than the reality. Therefore, it is our responsibility to show pupils why we take on managed risks and how we deal with challenges and mistakes as they happen. This means working closely with pupils, parents and colleagues – and challenging those who say ‘Health and Safety says no’ to evidence their concerns or policies.

So let your children dare to explore. Welcome risky play with both arms and watch as your pupils thrive.
