Mathematics: outdoor symmetry

Take maths outdoors with a fresh and creative twist.

This Outdoor Symmetry lesson plan is so easy to do. All you need is an open space and a bunch of loose materials. Simple!

Pupils can create large scale “math attack” symmetrical pictures using themselves or different materials; scrap, natural items, sticks, cones shells… you name it. This interactive, hands on activity is a brilliant way to strengthen your pupils’ understanding of symmetry. It’s memorable, novel and above all, fun!

This resource has been developed by Learning through Landscapes for upper primary pupils and includes references to the curriculum in England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland and is adaptable for different age groups.
