East London Schools are signing up to be part of this years celebration of outdoor learning. I have been in touch with schools in the area to find out how their plans for the day are shaping up and wishing that I could be in lots of different schools at once!
Dersingham Primary School in Newham have passed the planning of Empty Classroom Day onto their pupils. The Eco-Committee have decided that they would make it a week long festival to get the whole school involved and are running a Healthy Eating Week this week. Every class in school is taking part in different healthy eating activities during the week and then on Empty Classroom Day they are finishing the week with a celebration of the week and lots of healthy eating themed outdoor activities for the whole school to take part in! The Eco-Committee excitedly told me about lots of different ideas they had for the day including a treasure hunt to find different types of fruit and veg hidden in their school grounds and challenging other pupils to see who could do the most star jumps! I am looking forward to hearing about the final activities that they have decided on – they came up with way too many to be done in a day!
William Bellamy Primary School in Redbridge have been running a series of outdoor learning sessions in the run up to Empty Classroom Day, with more activities and outdoor lessons planned in for the actual day. Pupils from their school have visited a farm and made use of their school grounds and been pond dipping in their pond. They have spent time looking for all the underwater bugs and beasties, finding lots of fascinating creatures – a great hands on way of learning how to identify and classify animals, without having to be stuck inside a classroom on a beautiful sunny day!
